Advanced Powerboat
RYA ADVANCED POWERBOAT DAY & NIGHT COURSE
Course Fee: 550 Euros
This is an intensive course carried out over 2 days (plus 1 night), and students should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a thorough knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of Day Skipper. A current First Aid certificate and VHF radio operator’s licence must be held. Students must be of a minimum age of 17 years.
The aim of the course is to teach boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters with which the student may, or may not, be familiar. It is naturally assumed that students will already be experienced powerboaters.
Whereas in the Intermediate Course a daytime passage was planned and executed, this time we will do the same, not only in daylight but also at night.
Additional subjects that will be covered include:
- Acting as a skipper
- Navigating using soundings
- Navigating at high speeds
- Use of electronic navigational equipment
- Aids to pilotage
- Interpreting weather forecasts
- Interpreting a synoptic weather chart
- Engine checks and maintenance
- Fire prevention and fire fighting
- Medical emergencies
- Helicopter rescue procedures
- Search patterns
If, upon successful completion of the course, you wish to work commercially then it will be necessary for you to take an Advanced Powerboat Examination which must be carried out by an independent examiner. It is therefore imperative that you are ‘up to speed’ in all aspects of the syllabus. Further information concerning the examination, fees etc can be found on the RYA website at www.rya.org.uk
Please feel free to contact us to discuss any aspect of the Advanced Powerboat Course.
The practical elements of this course are carried out in a 7.5 metre RIB (rigid hulled inflatable boat) powered by a Volvo Penta D3 160 HP inboard diesel engine and operating from Puerto Calero Marina. The boat is fully equipped with DSC VHF radio, GPS, chartplotter and echo sounder. A full complement of safety equipment is also carried onboard.
