Powerboat Level 1
RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 1 COURSE - Duration 1 day

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 course provides an excellent practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. The minimum age for candidates is 12 years, and those under the age of 16 years will be issued with an endorsed certificate.
It is a one day course where no previous experience is required and is suitable for those persons wishing to try powerboating for the first time, or those who wish to gain some extra knowledge to act as ‘a crew member’ on a small powerboat.
This is mainly a ‘waterborne course’ where the majority of the theoretical elements will be covered whilst afloat. The following topics will be covered:
Practical
- Launch & recovery
- Preparation of boat and crew

- Boat Handling
- Picking up and securing to a mooring buoy
- Leaving and coming alongside a pontoon
- Being towed
- Rope work
Theory
- Loading and balancing the boat and the effect on handling and performance
- Local bye-laws
- Insurance
- Awareness of other water users
- The effects of wash
- Application of the collision regulations (IRPCS)
- Accepting a tow
The practical elements of the course are carried out in a 7.5 metre RIB (rigid hulled inflatable boat) powered by a Volvo Penta D3 160 HP inboard diesel engine and operating from Puerto Calero Marina. The boat is fully equipped with DSC VHF radio, chartplotter, GPS and echo sounder. A full complement of safety equipment is also carried onboard
